As the President of the Canterbury/Hurlstone Park Chamber of Commerce, I had a very interesting meeting with two representatives from the NSW State Metro Link project this month.
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past two years, this project has been heralded as the much-needed modernisation of one of the busiest and most used train lines in Sydney.
With construction to commence as early as 2018, the proposal aims to develop a fast driverless train service from Bankstown to Sydenham. The aim is to reduce trip times with more frequent, faster and newer train carriages similar to those currently operating on the Inner West light rail. Modeled on other international systems such as Hong Kong it's primary objective is to move more people around quicker at peak hour.
The issues? Well, I'm glad you asked.
The potential commuter cost to use the service has been the main concern with the grossly under-utilised Sydney Airport train station used as an example. The proposed construction time has also raised eyebrows with a 2024 completion date as well as the disruption of limited use on the existing line for most of the six year period and at least two years of no service at all.
The lack of seating on the carriages is a potential issue for elderly and disabled passengers, particularly those living closer to the city where the trains will be more full, the security concerns around significantly less rail staff on both the train and platforms, especially at night time, and what will happen to St.Peters and Erskineville stations who miss out on the upgrade ?
Many questions to be answered. If you're curious to find out more simply visit their website at https://www.sydneymetro.info/station/sydenham-bankstown and give me your feedback.
